At the time of the study, there was a debate about whether there should be a prenatal screening programme for toxoplasmosis in the UK. This study aimed to determine the number of cases in the British Isles. Cases were ascertained both via the BPSU and via laboratory reports to the Public Health Laboratory Service, Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC).
