Rapid-onset obesity with hypoventilation, hypothalamic dysfunction and autonomic dysregulation
Surveillance of Rapid-onset obesity with hypoventilation, hypothalamic dysfunction and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD) is to commence in November 2024 led by Dr Katherine Hawton. The study will help to estimate how many children have ROHHAD, understand more about the condition and how it is being managed.

Glucocorticoid induced adrenal suppression
BPSU surveillance of outcome of symptomatic glucocorticoid induced adrenal suppression commenced in September 2020. This study will estimate how many people are presenting to healthcare providers with adrenal suppression causing symptoms because of them currently or previously taking glucocorticoid medication; describe the characteristics of these patients; find out whether healthcare management differs from established guidelines; and see if there are identifiable factors in health professional or family practice that might prevent these patients from becoming unwell or reduce the severity of their illness in future.

Non-type 1 diabetes (Type 2 Diabetes) 1
When this study was undertaken, the epidemic of childhood obesity led to concerns that there may have been a parallel increase in the number of children with type 2 diabetes, given that type 2 diabetes had a link with obesity in adults. If the increased incidence of childhood obesity in the UK was associated with an increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, there was likely to be a significant impact on health service resources. The survey would establish the incidence of non-type 1 diabetes in children as well as early clinical features of type 2 diabetes and its association with obesity. The follow-up would identify clinical management, confirm how many non-type 1 cases are type 2 and examine short-term morbidity.

Cerebral oedema and death following diabetic ketoacidosis
This study aimed to ascertain all deaths attributable to OKA and all cases of cerebral oedema. Establish an independent national ascertainment procedure for the identification of cases of OKA in the childhood population. To estimate the absolute risk of cerebral oedema among children with OKA. To identify factors in the clinical presentation and subsequent clinical course of the child with OKA, which may influence the development of cerebral oedema. To study the outcome of cerebral oedema in Britain in terms of mortality and morbidity.

Transient and permanent neonatal diabetes
This study aimed to establish incidence rates for both the transient and permanent forms of neonatal diabetes (information which was not available from the literature). It was hoped that the data would allow comparisons between the clinical, physiological and genetic characteristics of the children presenting with these two conditions. This unique cohort of cases would allow evaluation of the influence of neonatal pancreatic islet cell dysfunction on later physical and endocrine development.

Insulin-dependent diabetes in under-fives
To establish the incidence of insulin-dependent diabetes diagnosed in children under 5 years of age in the British Isles during 1992, comparing the national and regional results with another 1988 national study, and estimating the 1992 study's level of case ascertainment.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS)
Surveillance of AIS wanted to determine the frequency of complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (annual incidence plus prevalence). To determine in such cases what proportion presents as a bilateral inguinal hernia in a female infant. To determine the frequency of partial androgen insensitivity syndrome. The survey also aimed to provide information on associations between androgen insensitivity syndrome and other disorders, describe the range of phenotypic abnormalities in partial androgen insensitivity syndrome, and present optimal diagnostic procedures and management options.

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in under-fifteens (Childhood onset diabetes)
This study focused on establishing the incidence rates for both the transient and permanent forms of neonatal diabetes (information which is not available from the literature). In addition, they hoped this study would allow comparisons between the clinical, physiological and genetic characteristics of the children presenting with these two conditions.
