About the study

From 1970 to 1980 the register depended on voluntary notification of cases by paediatricians and neurologists, laboratory reports to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) of the Public Health Laboratory Service (England and Wales), and copies of death certificates from the Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys (OPCS). From 1980 active surveillance was added with biennial postal enquiry from CDSC to all paediatricians and neurologists. From 1986 monthly enquiries through the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit9 replaced the CDSC postal enquiry to paediatricians.
